If you have been reading my post for any length of time you already know that I made a promise to myself to quit putting off some important medical check-ups. Well Monday I did the bravest thing of all and went for my first colonostomy. When I went for my annual visit to the Doctor he suggested that because I was fifty something it was time and even though I hated the thought of it, I knew he was right. The procedure itself is very simple, it is the getting ready for the procedure that is a total nightmare. Imagine power hosing the outside of your house in anticipation of Spring, only miniaturize it and do it to yourself. Enough said. I went to my appointment and I got called back right away so there was no time to be nervous. Linda was my designated driver and was in the waiting room drinking coffee and watching bad waiting room T.V. They got me ready and I lay on the gurney in my little paper gown waiting for the procedure. I hadn't been given any drugs yet and I was trying just to relax and wait. I looked up and I swear to God, the Maytag repair guy walked down the hall with a screwdriver and a hammer in his hand. At this point I was rapidly changing my mind about the prudence of my health care decision. The doctor came in, the procedure came and went and when I woke up from the anesthesia I wasn't totally sure I had ever seen the Maytag guy. After we got home Linda told me that while she was waiting a service guy in a uniform checked in at the front desk and went into the back room with a screwdriver and a hammer in his hand. She said that all she could think of, was "God, I hope none of the patients see that guy while they are in recovery." All I could think of was, if the Maytag repair guy is moonlighting as a colon specialist maybe he is the loneliest guy around.
Well I am glad the Maytag guy had nothing to do with your procedure. Good for you for going and getting it done - that preventative medicine stuff isn't always fun, but it does give you peace of mind.

Glad everything went well and you didn't need the use of a hammer and/ or screwdriver. That would have been painful. EEK! xoxo
